Find plumbing parts and tools on Amazon
A quick Amazon search for the parts and tools our guides mention, plus what to keep on hand so a small plumbing problem stays small.

Almost every repair in our guides comes down to a part that costs a few dollars and a tool most people already own. Use the search above for a particular item. Below is what we would keep in the house, and a few notes on choosing well.
Keep these on hand
For emergencies
- A water leak alarm behind the washing machine, under the kitchen sink and beside the water heater
- A meter key or a wrench that fits your main shut-off, if it needs one
- A bucket, a stack of old towels, and a flashlight that lives in the same place
For drains
- A flange plunger for toilets and a flat plunger for sinks
- A plastic hair-removal strip for bathroom drains
- A 25-foot hand drain snake
For small repairs
- Adjustable pliers, an adjustable wrench and a set of hex keys
- Thread seal tape and plumber's silicone grease
- A faucet washer and O-ring assortment
- A toilet flapper and a fill valve
- Two braided stainless faucet supply lines
For prevention
- Braided stainless washing machine hoses
- Foam pipe insulation for any pipe in a cold space
- Insulated covers for outdoor faucets
- Water hammer arrestors for the washing machine, if the pipes bang
- Water hardness test strips, if you are on a well
Choosing parts
- Take the old part with you, or photograph it. Faucet cartridges and toilet parts vary more than they look.
- Brand-name cartridges are worth the extra over generic ones. Many makers have lifetime warranties and will post a replacement free if you call.
- Braided stainless hoses from a known brand, with a stated pressure rating. The braid is only as good as the liner inside it.
- Skip chemical drain cleaners. Our guides explain why. An enzyme cleaner for monthly use is fine.
Tools to hire rather than buy
A powered drain auger, a pipe camera, a press tool for copper fittings: rent them, or let a plumber bring them. For that, find a licensed plumber near your town.
